It’s Not Only About Fiber
There are numerous artificial grass companies marketing their products out there. But, we want to let you in on a little secret. One of the most important elements of synthetic grass is not only the material the fiber (grass blades) is made of. The turf is a system that has to be installed correctly for proper performance. Below are just a few elements that will differentiate a low-quality synthetic turf from a high-quality turf.
The backing is composed of two layers and finished with a urethane coating. These components are critical because they secure the fibers (grass blades) in place, allow water to flow through, and withstand abrasion from the base material.
Infill is a crucial element. Infill adds labor and time but it’s the finishing touch that makes sure your warranty is valid and your solution performs well. Infill provides ballast, this keeps the turf wrinkle-free and dimensionally stable. It gives extra protection to the yarn and backing, helps drainage, and ensures a proper footing.
Yarn fiber is composed of resins manufactured to solve the dual challenges of durability and softness. Fibers come in many shades and combinations which allow the eye to see many greens. Thatch may be added for realism.
Keeping Things Cool with Science

Perspiring is a natural means of thermoregulation called evaporative cooling. Evaporation of moisture from the skin has a cooling effect. Likewise, HydroChill™ has shown the same ability to cool synthetic turf surfaces with the same principle. As turf surfaces are heated by the sun’s radiation, moisture present in the HydroChill™ turf is released. Evaporating moisture removes heat, providing a cooler, more comfortable playing surface.
A regular damp lawn will provide some cooling, but temperatures may rapidly rise and can become uncomfortably hot. In real-world applications, a HydroChill™ lawn has demonstrated the ability to create a large temperature differential. HydroChill™ has achieved 30° to 50° lower surface temperatures, based on actual lab and outdoor thermocouple testing, versus a regular synthetic turf system.
